Technology at the Olympics

Last Friday, the world witnessed the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. I always love the opening ceremonies for many reasons. We get to see the various athletes coming in that will represent our great country. However, I love all the music, dances, skits, and fashion as it highlights some of the most important times in that specific city's history.

However, I did not realize until I took this class, just how much technology is used to stream not only the opening ceremonies but the Olympics in general. The Olympics is streamed 24/7 on the television for the next few weeks. However, people can catch some of the action on social media sites such as Facebook or TikTok. There are even apps that Android and Apple have come out with that is dedicated just to the Olympics. I do not think there was this much technology for the Olympics around 25 years ago.

I also think about how the athletes are using social media and technology while they are competing over in Paris. Some of them are lucky if their parents or families get to join them. However, not every family is that lucky. With technology, families can huddle around the TV or streaming device to watch their loved one compete. The athletes can use their social medias to stay in touch with their families and friends as they are competing, so they do not feel alone.

While it may not seem like it, technology and social media play a big part in the 2024 Summer Olympics. Without it, it may be hard to watch our favorite athlete compete. It may make it isolated for the athletes without connections to their families. For this I am glad for social and technology.

Now time to watch some Olympics... GO USA!

  1. USA! USA! USA! I can appreciate a post about the Olympics! What was your favorite part about the opening ceremonies?? I loved seeing Snoop Dogg (he has such a smooth speaking voice), watching Lady Gaga Perform, and soaking in all of the creativity into coordinating the event.

Social media is HUGE this year. I am enjoying watching olympians post content about the Olympic Village. One of my faves is Ilona Maher, USA Rugby player. She has great content and I appreciate her using her platform to support body positivity.
