Creating a Web Presence

As part of this week's readings, there was an on creating intentional web presences (Lowenthal et al., 2016). In today's world, so much is done online. We pay bills online, submit applications, run social media, and even do homework. Every time we are online, we are creating a digital footprint. However, are we intentional with our digital footprint and presence? Think about teenagers and kids. Do you think they think about what they are posting before they do it?

I think it would be important for all students to take a web class of some sort. In this class, they can learn the importance of digital footprints and how to create a web presence. As a school counselor, I always tell my students to be careful what they post online, whether it be on social media or somewhere else. Once you post something, it cannot be taken back. I also tell them that colleges and some employers are now asking for social media links to look at profiles.

Some kids may say that Lauren doesn't want me to have fun. That is not what I'm saying at all. Trust me, I love to have fun. I love to travel and put pictures on Facebook and Instagram of my travels. However, what I am saying is that students and adults need to be mindful and intentional of what they are placing on their social media platforms. I would hate for a student to not get into their dream college or get their dream job based off their social media account when some posts may have been avoided.

In closing, it is important to create an intentional web presence and digital footprint. If you use the Internet like me, what are your tips for creating intentional web presence?

  1. Hi Lauren, I concur that educating youth on developing a web presence is essential. However, another critical part is teaching adults and students to respect others. Cyberbullying is such a pervasive issue now on social media. The ability to record others and post them on social media sites without their permission can be highly harmful. Despite the individual's best attempts to develop their online presence, someone else can quickly tarnish it.

  2. Lauren, I would have to agree that students learning about web presence is important. Giving students a chance to develop those skills needed in the online setting is also important. With online platflorms being on the rise, having students learn the correct way to present themselves is needed.
